The opportunity

We are seeking a consultant to join EY’s Business Tax Advisory – Quantitative Services (“QS”) Global Delivery Services (“GDS”) team based in Manila. The GDS-QS team is a diverse team of highly qualified engineering and industry professionals focused on supporting technology-focused innovative companies to access Government funding.

As a GDS-QS team member, you will work closely with EY colleagues in Australia and/or New Zealand to support companies to access Government Incentives that aim to incentivize companies in these countries to invest in innovation. Drawing on your technical knowledge gained from your education or experience in the industry, you will primarily advise and support our clients in accessing Research and Development (“R&D”) tax incentives, as well as potentially other government grants and innovation-related government/growth incentives.

You will be working with a variety of clients at the forefront of technology, including some of the largest global corporations, to evaluate and prepare their Government Incentive proposals and applications. You will work closely with our client’s engineers and scientists and will be responsible for analysing the technological aspects of their projects. You will play an active role in developing technical reports of clients’ projects and taking part in client communication. This role will require you to work in close collaboration within a geographically diverse, team-based and consultancy environment. It will also require you to have strong technical knowledge, technical report writing skills, interpersonal and communication skills, and project management skills.

In our friendly, high-performing, collaborative environment, you’ll receive the support, formal training and coaching you need to progress quickly along your career path. Not to mention access to the opportunity to be exposed and keep up to date with novel business models, cutting-edge technology trends and developments.

As a GDS-QS team member, you will also be part of an exciting and diverse group of Manila-based EY professionals. The GDS-QS team in Manila is recently established and is expected to grow rapidly. This is an ideal opportunity for proactive leaders interested in fast-tracking their career journey.

Your key responsibilities

  • Acquire a broad knowledge of current scientific and engineering advancements and technologies to identify opportunities for Government Incentives for client projects in fields including, but not limited to, software development, cyber security, artificial intelligence, machine learning, health/life sciences, manufacturing, and process engineering.
  • Attend client-facing discussions with client subject matter experts, such as project managers, software development teams and engineers, to discuss the technological and commercial aspects of their projects.
  • From these discussions, work with the local country engagement team to identify opportunities for claiming Government Incentives.
  • Review and analyze client technical and commercial documentation to assist with formulating assessments in relation to Government Incentive eligibility.
  • Write technical project descriptions that detail the client’s projects and R&D activities.
  • In addition, there is an opportunity to assist with the preparation of other client deliverables, such as, expenditure calculations, letters of opinion and supporting schedules.

Skills and attributes for success

To qualify for the role, you must have

  • University degree in a Science or Engineering field (including, Physics, Chemistry, Petroleum Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Bio Science/Engineering).
  • Excellent English communication skills (written, verbal, and listening) with the ability to articulate complex information clearly.
  • Genuine interest in business, innovation, and technology, along with a curious mindset and the ability to work with ambiguity to help shape and form an opinion.
  • Strong relationship builder with excellent influencing and questioning skills.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to work with complex and detailed information.
  • Strong time management and task management skills, allowing you to handle and manage multiple concurrent engagement tasks, timelines, and stakeholders.

Ideally, you’ll also have

  • A combined qualification in Accounting, Commerce, Business or Law and a Science or Engineering discipline, and those with master’s or PhD level qualifications, will be considered favourably.

I engage in work-based learning sessions whenever I am not assigned to a project. I have already gained valuable experience from my first engagement, where I was responsible for updating walkthroughs and conducting testing. So far, I have maintained a good work-life balance.

Pros and cons of working at EY Global Delivery Services PH

Pros

  • The best thing about working at our company is the flexibility it offers, which allows for a healthy work-life balance

  • EY GDS give the best training you can have

  • EY GDS places a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion, particularly regarding women, ethnic minorities, and the LGBTIQA+ community

  • Benefits, work-life balance, people, free web learning materials

  • One of the things I appreciate the most is the company culture regarding asking questions. Since I am an engineering graduate with no prior experience or exposure to business tax, I went into my job blind and confused about many things. Both the Manila and SG teams have been very helpful in helping me settle into my role and clearing up any confusions with the work given to me. There's no such thing as "stupid questions"; if you really don't know something, you are encouraged to ask and not default to figuring it out on your own

Cons

    • The hierarchy is very complex, and you tend to get passed around when you ask questions

    • The onboarding process was quite overwhelming

    • The traffic outside

    • The base pay is somewhat competitive within the industry. The presence of a variable bonus makes the compensation package very appealing. These bonuses are tied to performance, company profitability, and individual achievements, providing a strong incentive for employees to excel in their roles

    • Not the worst, but one minor issue I have (probably just because I'm new to the set-up) is that I'm working closely with a team that I don't even see or talk to in person. Being the first in the BTA-QS team to support SG, I only have my onshore counterparts and teammates to consult with for work questions and other related things. It feels weird to me for the time being, but I'll get used to it with time
